Artisoft Technical Bulletin 08.16.93 RG MULTI-USER INSTALL OF WINDOWS 3.1 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The following details a multiuser install of Microsoft Windows 3.1 and ARTISOFT LANtastic versions 4.x or later. A multiuser install of Windows is generally done in situations where you want to share Windows from server, because your workstations are either diskless or floppy based, or there is not enough hard disk space on the workstation's local hard disk. For best performance, Windows should be installed locally on each station rather than shared through the network. Check your Microsoft 3.1 license agreement to make sure you will be in full compliance with your license. Contact Microsoft for additional licensing information. The following options all assume the LANtastic network has been installed and is up an running before you run these options. Windows will detect it is on a network and will configure its system.ini file accordingly. When you have completed the Windows installation run the network configuration procedure at the end of this document. SERVER INSTALLATION 1) Run the Administrative setup for Windows at the server. This will create a shared directory for the Windows program files. A:\SETUP/A 2) Enter your User name and Company name. 3) When prompted enter the path to be used for the Shared Windows directory. C:\WINSHARE 4) The setup program will now start to expand and copy all the files off of each of the Windows installation diskettes. The Setup program will also set the read/write attribute for these files to read-only so the files can be shared by the Windows stations. Change the diskettes as prompted by the setup program. 5) The administrative setup is now complete. Each station that will be sharing Windows will now need to log into the server and run SETUP/N from this shared Windows directory. The Server will also need to do this procedure if it will be running Windows. The SETUP/N options for both the Server and the Workstations are discussed below. WORKSTATION SETUP (for server) 1) Change to the shared Windows directory. C: CD\WINSHARE 2) Run the network setup option from this directory. The following steps use the dos Net Manager which is available on both the Dos and Windows versions of LANtastic. 1) Load Net Manager at dos. NET_MGR.EXE 2) Select 'Shared Resources'. 3) Highlight the printer resource (@printer or whatever one you are using) and press enter. 4) Highlight the 'Char per second' line and press enter. 5) Enter 10000 for the characters per second and press enter 6) Press 'ESC' once to exit the printer resource. 7) If you have other printer resources make this same change to them now. 8) Press 'ESC' to exit shared resources. 9) Highlight 'Server startup Parameters' from the Net manager menu and press enter. 10) Set 'Printer tasks' to 1 (default setting) Set 'Run Burst' to 2 (default setting) 11) Exit Net Manager by pressing the 'ESC' key twice. 12) Reboot this machine. 13) Net Manager changes are complete. OTHER INFORMATION: For diskless and floppy-only stations you may get an error stating "Windows cannot find the path to EMM386.EXE" when you try to load Windows. This usually occurs on a floppy-only station when the boot floppy has been removed from the drive. On a diskless workstation this usually occurs after a NET UNLINK command has been issued. You maybe able to get around this problem by making the following changes: CONFIG.SYS for workstation: DEVICE=EMM386.EXE /Y=C:\WINJOHN\EMM386.EXE NOEMS SWITCHES/W System.ini in Windows user area for this station (example C:\WINJOHN): [386ENH] DEVICE=C:\WINA20.386 ARTISOFT, Inc. makes no warranties as to the completeness or accuracy of this document.
