Artisoft Technical Bulletin Updated: 06.30.94 RLH/DMA LANtastic v6.0 Exchange Setup ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Definition of Server Based Mode Verses Client Based Mode Operation þ Definition of PO Server in CLIENT BASED MODE: Client based mode allows for each machine to be responsible for actual delivery of Exchange messages (Mail and Scheduler). For smaller networks, it this method is recommend, because you don't need a dedicated PO server running WMTAEXEC or MTAEXEC. This allows for Post Office machine to be used locally for other functions. IMPORTANT: You cannot run gateways (fax, pager -- digital or text), LANmail (DOS to windows gateway) in CLIENT BASED MODE þ Definition of PO Server in SERVER BASED MODE: In server based mode the PO server is responsible for actual delivery of Exchange messages (mail and scheduler.). For LARGER networks this method is recommended, because there is more network traffic. In client based mode each individual machine would have to go out on the network and process messages creating even more network traffic, which can cause degradation in network performance. IMPORTANT: In order for the post office server to process mail requests, the MTA Server Gateway must be enabled. Please see the "Setting up Gateways" section for detals on enabling gateways. Even if you will not be using any other gateways (fax, pager, etc) the MTA Server Gateway MUST be enabled; mail will not be delivered otherwise. NOTE: you don't need to have a drive redirection to the PO mail store server. you only need be logged into the server Setting up Post Office Server (PO server) in Client Based Mode 1. Before you begin, decide which computer will act as the Post Office. This computer should be a fast computer with a large hard disk. YOU MUST SIT IN FRONT OF MACHINE THAT WILL BE USED AS POST OFFICE (message store location), BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH FOLLOWING STEPS. 2. WHILE SITTING IN FRONT OF THE POST OFFICE MACHINE. Install LANtastic V6.0. Follow the instructions given in your LANtastic Installation and Management Guide. When prompted choose the Artisoft Exchange - Mail and Scheduler. This will then bring up the Artisoft Exchange Mail Options window. 3. Choose the Artisoft Exchange - Mail Post Office option. If you've already installed mail on other computers, be sure to enter the same name for the Post Office that you entered for the other computers. WRITE DOWN THE PO NAME ON A PIECE OF PAPER. 4. Choose either to use existing LANtastic NOS accounts or to setup special accounts for use exclusively by Exchange. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE SEPARATE ACCOUNTS. THIS ALLOWS FOR EASIER ADMINISTRATION, AND MORE FLEXIBLE USE. 5. Now that the network PO server has been identified with the PO name, finish the remainder of the LANtastic install by following instructions on screen. 6. Go into Windows and load ARTISOFT EXCHANGE MAIL (Not Artisoft Exchange Post Office) 7. When login prompt appears, login as SYSTEM. 8. Open USER ACCOUNTS folder from main window. 9. Choose ADMINISTRATION menu option that is listed on menu title bar. 10. Choose NEW ACCOUNTS 11. Create individual accounts for exchange users (mail AND scheduler.). 12. Exit EXCHANGE. 13. Using either WNET_MGR or NET_MGR, create individual accounts for each MACHINE in the network that will be using EXCHANGE (mail and scheduler). For example if the mahcine name (as specified on the REDIR command line) is M3 or M10, create Individual Accounts in NET_MGR for M3 or M10. IMPORTANT: Make sure that every node in network that will be using exchange is logged into the po machine as individual account, not as * (wildcard) account. 14. Exit WNET_MGR / NET_MGR. 15: Reboot machine, watch for errors, if any. END OF INSTALLATION Setting up PO server in Server Based Mode 1. Before you begin, decide which computer will act as the Post Office. This computer should be a fast computer with a large hard disk. Choose ADMINISTRATION menu option that is listed on menu title bar. 13. Choose POST OFFICE MODE. 14. Disable Enable Audit by clicking x-box so that box is cleared 15. Select SERVER BASED option, then click OK. 16. Exit EXCHANGE. 17. Using either WNET_MGR (Windows NET_MGR) or NET_MGR (DOS NET_MGR), create individual accounts for each MACHINE (\\M3 & \\M10 instead of BOB & SUE. {machine name instead of Exchange usernames}) in the network that will be using Exchange (Mail and Scheduler). IMPORTANT: Make sure that every node in network that will be using Exchange is logged into the po machine as individual account, not as * account. 18. Exit WNET_MGR or NET_MGR 19. Reboot machine, check for errors END OF INSTALLATION Setting Up Gateways (FAX/Pager/LANtastic Mail to Exchange/etc.) You don't have to be sitting on PO server to setup gateways. You only need to login as system under Exchange. IMPORTANT: Make sure that no one else is using Exchange while setting up gateways. This could cause message corruption. 1. In Windows, open Exchange by double clicking on Exchange mail icon. 2. Login as SYSTEM. 3. Open Gateways folder. 4. Open folder that has same name as Post Office. 5. Open MTA events. 6. All gateways that ship with EXCHANGE are already listed (FAX / DIGITAL PAGER / TEXT PAGER / MTA SERVER (actual mail server)/ LANtastic mail to EXCHANGE MAIL (LANmail)). 7. Decide which gateway to enable/modify. Highlight appropriate entry and double click associated icon. 8. Enter time frame for interval (this is what enables the particular gateway.). It is recommended that interval time frame be at least 20 seconds. If machine is going to be used as file or print server, time interval should be AT LEAST 60 seconds. NOTE: BY INCREASING TIME INTERVAL FOR A PARTICULAR GATEWAY, THIS MAY DELAY DELIVERY OF THAT TYPE OF MESSAGE. The interval time frame is how often Exchange looks for events. 9. Click on OPTIONS button. 10. Fill in pertinent data. 11. Choose save from MTA menu 12. Exit EXCHANGE. END OF SETUP Setting Up the Fax Gateway Supported Fax Modems In order to use the Fax Gateway, the Mail Server must have a fax modem installed. The following fax modems are supported: þ All Class 1, Class 2 or SendFax modems þ CAS V1.2 (or higher) compatible fax modem Included with Artisoft Exchange is a CAS manager (WordPerfect FaxDirect.). This is a TSR program that provides CAS compatibility for all Class 1, Class 2 and SendFax modems. Use this CAS manager if you're using one of these modems. CAS V1.2 compatible fax modems have their own CAS manager software. If you have a fax modem and CAS management software already, you may use either CAS manager. If you want a logo page to be the first page of every fax, you must set it up through the CAS manager software. NOTE: if PO machine is running Windows, and using WordPerfect FaxDirect CAS manager (that ships with v6.0 NOS). make sure following preliminary steps are taken: A1. Copy the device drivers from the installation disk to the Windows SYSTEM directory. To do this type: COPY A:\EXPCOMM.DRV C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EXPCOMM.DRV COPY A:\EXPVCD.386 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EXPVCD.386 Where A: is the drive containing the installation disk, and C:\WINDOWS is the path to the Windows installation directory. A2. Using a text editor such as DOS EDIT or Windows Notepad, edit your SYSTEM.INI file (in your Windows directory) and add the following lines. þ In the [386Enh] section add the line: TimerCriticalSection=500 and replace the line DEVICE=*VCD with DEVICE=EXPVCD.386 (Add the above line to the [386Enh] section if it doesn't exist.) NOTE: If you experience lockup problems during operation of the Fax Gateway or fax printer driver, increase the TimerCriticalSection setting to 1000. þ Replace the line that begins "COMM.DRV" (or add it to the [boot] section if it doesn't exist) with the following: COMM.DRV=EXPCOMM.DRV A3. Save the SYSTEM.INI file. You're now ready to use the Fax Gateways and fax printer driver in Windows. ENABLING THE FAX GATEWAY ITSELF 1. First set up a Fax Gateway account as described above under setting up gateways. 2. Setting at the computer that has the fax/modem physically attached, exit windows if it is running, insert the WordPerfect FaxDirect diskette in floppy drive and run install.exe from that floppy disk. For more information on FaxDirect setup, refer to WordPerfect FaxDirect for ARTISOFT Exchange booklet. 3. Run Windows, open Artisoft Exchange mail. 4. Login as SYSTEM. 5. From main Artisoft Exchange window open GATEWAY FOLDERS. 6. Open the folder with the same name as the main Post Office. 7. Open MTA EVENTS FOLDER. 8. Highlight & double click MTA CAS FAX icon. 9. Click on OPTIONS button. 10. Fill in necessary information: þ Fax Administrator USERID (example: SUE or BOB). þ Dial out prefix (for example: 9, to get outside line.) 11. Choose SAVE from MTA menu option. 12. Exit exchange. 13. Run MTAEXEC or WMTAEXEC on Post Office machine. END OF SETUP Setting Up the Digital Pager Gateway In order to use the Digital Pager Gateway, the post office machine must have a modem installed. In addition, the phone line to the digital pager modem must support DTMF. This means that it must be a touch-tone analog phone line. Digital phone lines (PBX lines) are not supported. 1. First set up a DIGITAL PAGER gateway as described above under setting up gateways. 2. Run windows, open Artisoft Exchange mail. 3. Login as SYSTEM. 4. From main Artisoft Exchange window open GATEWAY FOLDERS. 5. Open the folder with the same name as the main Post Office. 6. Open MTA EVENTS folder. 7. Highlight & double click DIGITAL PAGER icon. 8. In MTA EVENTS, open the LANTASTIC QUEUE object (by double clicking on object.) 7. Enter source server (name of LANtastic post office (DOS based machine that is handling DOS mail requests)). Example: \\M5 or \\SERVER. NOTE: Use same machine for NOS Mail Server & Exchange PO Server. Also Set the super privilege M in NET_MGR or WNET_MGR.EXE for PO machine name ONLY (example: give \\M3 super Q privilege if that is the machine where NOS accounts and Exchange accounts are located.) 8. Enter mail resource available on DOS machine (Example: @MAIL). 9. Leave following fields blank: þ Destination address þ Destination server þ Destination resource 10. Choose SAVE from QUEUE menu option. 11. Close ALL windows, except main EXCHANGE window. 12. Open GATEWAY folders. 13. Open LANTASTIC MAIL GATEWAY folder. 14. Open BOTH PUBLIC ADDRESS BOOK and PRIVATE ADDRESS BOOK. So that both windows are visible on screen 15. Create a shadow (.hold down shift key and drag icon with mouse.) for all addresses that want to receive mail from DOS LANtastic mail from PUBLIC ADDRESS BOOK to PRIVATE ADDRESS BOOK. NOTE: LANtastic mail will only address to machine names, not to user names, so if usernames in exchange are different than machine names, highlight the associated username, then click on objects menu option. Choose attributes option from the menu. While within attributes, change the display name field to the machine name that matches the redir machine name. 16. Exit Exchange. 17. Run MTAEXEC or WMTAEXEC on post office machine END OF SETUP Setup of Other Gateways are Listed in Exchange Manual on Following Pages: Setting Up the LANtastic Queue Gateway Pg.91 Network Post Office-to-Post Office Message Exchange Pg.93 (optional product) Setting Up the MCI Mail Gateway Pg.94 (optional product) Setting Up the MHS Gateway Pg.96 (optional product) Remote Post Office-to-Post Office Message Exchange Pg.98 (optional product) Important Additional notes þ At this point in time, only Microsoft Windows applications can send Fax's to the Artisoft Exchange Gateway. DOS applications WILL NOT WORK with Artisoft Exchange. Thus, DOS applications cannot share a common FAX modem that is installed in the Exchange server. Because Exchange is a Windows application, all applications that want to use Exchange for purposes of sending faxes MUST BE WINDOWS BASED APPLICATIONS. þ Once Exchange has been installed, backup C:\LANTASTI\AMAIL directory. By copying all files in the directory to some other directory on the hard drive. By doing this, if the message store becomes corrupted, all you have to do is delete the working directory and restore from the backup directory. If this step is not taken, and message store becomes corrupted, you must delete the entire LANtastic Exchange program and re-install. þ Use separate accounts rather than LANtastic accounts when prompted by LANtastic install program. This makes administration much easier. For example: once Exchange is setup (NOS v6.0 installed on PO server.), mail users can login and use Exchange from any machine, not just their specific machine that was specified during NOS v6.0 installation. Other reasons include: different names for mail verses NOS - which means friendlier system administration. þ Use individual accounts rather than * wildcard account. Never login under * account when setting up or using Exchange, this will generate error messages from Exchange. It is RECOMMENDED that you use machine names (\\M3, \\M10) for individual accounts in NET_MGR.EXE or WNET_MGR.EXE þ ARTMAIL.INI, is where all pertinent information for Exchange is held (Mail and Scheduler.) Default location: C:\WINDOWS\ARTMAIL.INI þ SERVER.INI is where all pertinent Post Office information is held for Exchange (mail and scheduler.) Default location: c:\lantasti\amail\server.ini --> make sure that SET SERVER_INI=C:\LANTASTI\AMAIL\SERVER.INI is in STARTNET.BAT þ An easy way of changing PO servers (from \\M10 TO \\M3 for example) is to change the properties for Exchange icons (Mail and Scheduler.) in windows. ONCE THIS CHANGE IS MADE YOU WILL LOSE ALL MAIL ACCOUNTS, MESSAGES AND SCHEDULER INFORMATION þ To send a fax you have one of two choices, you can either print to FAX from a CAS compliant WINDOWS application, or you may print from any Windows application to ARTISOFT FAX PRINT DRIVER (ARTFAX.DRV.), this printer driver can be installed by selecting the following from within Windows: þ Control Panel from main group in PROGRAM MANAGER þ Printers from control panel þ Add printer þ Unlisted or updated printer driver þ When prompted for path for printer driver (default is A:\.), type in the path to the PO server \windows\system directory. This is where the OEMSETUP.INF is located. IMPORTANT: If you install multiple P.O.þs, they will handle mail independently of each other. Your mail system will not send messages between Post Office computers without the OPTIONAL Post Office-to-Post Office Gateway. þ Choose a speedy computer with a large hard disk. You MUST use at least a 386 computer for the Post Office computer. This is because there are DPMI calls made that 286 or below computers cannot support. Other non-post office machines may be any Windows capable machine. IF YOU ARE RUNNING THE PO MACHINE IN SERVER BASED MODE VERSES CLIENT BASED MODE IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE PO SERVER BE DEDICATED TO THE TASK OF SERVING MAIL REQUESTS AND NOTHING ELSE. If PO server is to be used as file server or print server AND WILL BE RUNNING IN SERVER MODE, then increase INTERVAL setting for each gateway (ex. 60 seconds or above.). This will allocate more CPU time slices to other functions (LANtastic NOS server functions). þ Setting up a Mail Server allows you to use the Fax and Pager Gateways provided with Artisoft Exchange Mail. It will also allow you to extend the basic configuration by purchasing ADDITIONAL Gateways, such as the Network PO-to PO-Gateway, and the Remote Post Office Gateway. A server takes care of all message transactions. The computer acting as a mail server delivers messages created by client stations on the network. þ Locating the Message Store and Program File Directories: When you install a Post Office, two directories are created on the Post Office computer. One directory, \LANTASTI\AMAILPRG, contains program and .DLL files for Exchange (mail and scheduler.). The other directory, \LANTASTI\AMAIL, is the directory on which database files and message files (mail and scheduler.) are stored, regardless of which computer (client, network client or mail server) actually sends the messages. This area is called the Artisoft Exchange Mail Message Store. þ On the PO office server where MTAEXEC.EXE is running add a command to the STARTNET.BAT file as follows: NET MESSAGE/DISABLE POP If a unique problem arises which we are unable to resolve either through initial phone contact or through this bulletin, please contact our Windows specialists in our technical support department at (602) 670-7000. Any questions or suggestions on this bulletin may be mailed to our offices to the attention of the Compatibility Department / Artisoft Exchange support.
